SL Writing | Writing for NaNoWriMo

by PacificBlue on October 16, 2009

I came into the virtual metaverse of Second Life as a writer – I joined groups, even set up a writing studio or office in my own house (there have been many variations to this office, but it always exists), and I’ve written and planned novels within second life.

Lately I’ve not written anything, suffering a bad case of immobilisation as my personal life took over. In a real world perspective, this week has seen me rekindling my own fictional writing self by attending a full week Writing Conference called Muse. There, I’ve learnt a bit about myself, learnt a bit more about writing techniques and lit a fire under two different planned out novels I’ve previously worked on.

Still, on Day 5 of this week long series of workshops, I still found myself reluctant to commit towards starting work. Last year and even up until August this year, I had plans to write another novel during the National Novel Writing Month of November. NaNoWriMo is a huge event outside of Second Life – the challenge is taken up by thousands of writers worldwide.

My efforts last year were successful, I wrote 120,000 words in the month and basically 12,000 per day. This year I’d given up hope that I would be able to (emotionally) commit to doing that again.

Then Second Life closed the point on me. From the Milkwood Writers Group which I’ve belonged to for several months came the news that Milkwood now has a NaNoWriMo tree out. There are prim books up there where you can put up a texture of your future novel. And the regular writing hours (Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 1pm SLT) will now be dedicated to writing for NaNoWriMo during November. There, you can go along and spend an hour of your writing day along with others slogging their way through their own novels, put up word counts and generally support each other.

Now, with Second Life coming down on my head at the same time the Muse Conference is winding up my own writerly intentions, I have decided to open up another category here on The Chicken Diaries to show you all some of the creative writing sides to Second Life. Note : there are many different writing groups and establishments within Second Life. I happen to enjoy the gypsy caravan atmosphere provided by Milkwood, but many others provide incentives and support through NaNoWriMo also, so do a search if you want more information.
